Joan was inspired when she visited her friend’s home that we had previously helped to make a Pleasant Place. She and Rod recently moved to SC, and she was having a hard time making the new space her own. Joan has an exciting personality. It is clear to anyone who sees her refrigerator that she is bold and bright with a fun sense of humor. She is drawn to unique and eclectic artwork like that of Banksy. Her husband Rod is easy-going and for the most part just wanted his spot on the sofa to be in front of his TV. The problem was that floor plan of this house had some challenges that were causing her to be frustrated and overall she was disappointed that her new home was not yet a place that she was proud of. So, Rod and Joan, along with their lively doodle pup Rex (aka Wrecks) went away for the weekend and left us with the keys to their house. changing the wall color from buttery bland to crisp & clean with Benjamin Moore’s Palest Pistachio 2122-60. This backdrop was the blank canvas needed for all the colorful décor and artwork. Our strategy was to take the shapes, colors, and patterns that were in the art, furniture, and finishes that they already had and repeat those over and over again in the open floor plan until they made sense in the space. It was so exciting to see it all come together. At first, it seemed to be chaos, but each item added - whether it was a pillow, rug, light fixture, curtain, accessory or piece of art - started to harmonize with the other elements in the space. The outcome was a Practical Update that was the perfect expression of Joan and Rex. Rod was beside himself with the results, but mostly he and Buddy were just glad that we hadn't moved their favorite seats. Now their home is such a fun, beautifully bright, and Pleasant Place that you can’t help but smile when you visit!
